Until official previews of real DS games arrive, we could only hazard a guess as to what the launch titles would be. However, the rapturous applause that welcomed the technical demos would certainly suggest something along those lines could work nicely. Below is the round up of what was on display at yesterday's showing.
PAC-PIX
As mentioned above, this is a straightforward concept that makes excellent use of the touch-screen and stylus. In its present state, it's not quite enough to be a full game, more of an appetiser than a main course.
Wario Ware DS
WARIO WARE DS
Although only a few stages are presently playable, the full release is unlikely to be markedly different. It works brilliantly, the simple mini-games marry with the stylus-controlled interface perfectly.
PICTOCHAT
This works as a wireless communicator, allowing participants to doodle and type at each other. Although it didn't offer the practical PDA-type features some might have hoped for, it proves that it would be perfectly pausible to produce such a project.
TABLE HOCKEY
Again, this was a simple demonstration of what the DS could do rather than what it will do. However, any simple sport like this translates very well to the new machine. If you imagine the stylus as any sporting tool, the possibilities are endless: swing the club, swipe the racket, smack the bat and so on...
'3D LATHE'
This was more to show the 3D graphical capabilities of the DS, which are surprisingly powerful. Merely rotating, zooming and 'shaving' various 3D objects using the stylus is hardly entertaining in itself, but it proves that good visuals can be achieved without too much hassle.
BABY MARIO GAME
Perhaps the most creative concept on show, this Mario game was a firm favourite. Mario falls from the sky in the upper screen, and the player has to sketch clouds in the lower screen to guide him on the righteous path to a safe landing. This demo could easily evolve into a very important DS game.
Metroid Prime: Hunters
SUBMARINE
Using the lower touch screen as a virtual cockpit, this will prove inspiring to other developers. Because the gameplay itself doesn't requires a crack squad of creative geniuses, we could see less adventurous developers following suit. Just using that lower screen as a control panel or menu makes all the difference in creating smooth uninterupted gameplay.
METROID PRIME: HUNTERS
The only playable level was a deathmatch multi-player one, and alas, it wasn't linked up to any other consoles. However, MPH was ample proof that Nintendo are combining the 3D graphical powers with the touch screen controls in perfect harmony. If Hunters is anything less than brilliant when it gets its full release, it would be hugely surprising and disappointing in equal measure.
