One of THE all-time biggest bust-ups in the video game industry is the row between SquareSoft and Nintendo. Without going into the nitty-gritty of it, Square abandoned Nintendo when it opted to use cartridges for the Nintendo 64. Final Fantasy VII sold a trillion copies on the PlayStation and the two companies never spoke again.
The creator of the Final Fantasy series, Hironobu Sakaguchi, made some interesting comments when interviewed recently, about what they are up to over at Square. He revealed that at present the development teams are in the process of making a staggering twenty-three games. Of these twenty-three, eleven are remakes of Square’s impressive back catalogue.
He has confirmed that they are currently working on complete remakes of Final Fantasy VII, VIII and IX for the PlayStation 2. It has not been made clear what improvements will be made to the titles at this time. He also said that the SNES/Super Famicom titles, Final Fantasy IV, V, and VI would be ported across to handheld consoles. At present Final Fantasy is only available in handheld form on the Japan-only WonderSwan Color. Sakaguchi stated that Square may port the games across to the upcoming Game Boy Advance, allowing much greater access to the dedicated global Final Fantasy consumer base.
