Power to the PSP

Battery life shortfalls addressed by third-party manufacturers and Sony rearguard action.

Power to the PSP
Ah, the PSP. Isn’t it shiny and desirable? That screen, those crisp, clear graphics. It’s like a cross between an iPod and an Atari Lynx. The only problem has always been the battery life. When playing games that stream a lot of data from the UMD, the PSP can suffer battery power dropping as low as two hours from a fully charged state. Indeed, it is this shortcoming that Nintendo have most highlighted in their rival's machine, pointing out that their DS boasts around 10 hours of play between recharges.

Now it seems that there are several solutions. Sony announced in Japan a couple of months back that a new battery with extended life will be available for the handheld within a year – if we’re lucky maybe even before the European launch. If you’ve already bought a PSP, or were planning to in the very near future, this good news may have left you feeling less than happy.

Worry no more, however. An external battery pack is now available from Honk Kong-based accessory store Brando, for the measly sum of $13US. You attach the lifesaver to your desirable lifestyle accessory through the adaptor socket (no doubt PSP owners will be very familiar with this part of the console). The more image conscious of early adopters may not like the look of it; though, would you still like Eva Mendes if she had a, ahem, hump on her back?

Personally I have never found the battery life an issue with the psp, granted I do have it on a low light setting when playing games, but its still pretty bright, the only problem for me is the lack of space on the memory stick and transfering music on it is a general pain in the a*se.

Pfff, what's the point of it being portable...

seriously, i had a 'laptop' like that. Bought it nearly 3 years ago. It was a P4 2.4 ghz (yeah, at that time, for a 'portable' that was HAWT!), with 512 MB ram etc... COOL machine... to use AT HOME: it had a bright big 15" screen, all the bells and whistles, but it needed an external battery!!!!!! The entire set weight about a ton and was bulky as an xbox.

Never again, never again.

I've now gone back to my first love: Toshiba's Portégé series... it fits in my backpack, wifi built-in, sd card reader built-in, BEST garantee/service ever (3 year worldwide, even for 2nd hand units, which i've used -sadly enough- but both times got the unit back within 1 day.) and it merely weighs a kilogram. But it's not as powerfull... so what.

This article is total rubbish. PSP battery life is fine unless 6 hours solid gaming without headphones isnt enough for you.

The only reason the PSP might have low battery life is if you're constantly on the WiFi. Thats the only reason a new battery would be welcome.

PSP's battery life is fine.

Dude, so is your posting.

Do you work for Sony, or is typing difficult from within your straight jacket?

The PSP can manage about 3/4 hours of gaming tops. When watching video from the SD card, not from UMD it drops as low as 2.5 hours.

Personally, I'm happy with both those durations. But let's not get all fan-boyish and carried away pretending it lasts longer than it does.
