Japanese retails sees queues form to place PSP pre-orders – Photos included
In what SPOnG believes is a first, gamers in Japan are right now queuing overnight to place pre-orders for the new Sony PSP handheld.

No doubt triggered by the information trickle foretelling miniscule day one availability, placed at below 130,000 units in some reports, people are willing to brave the cold to sign up for a launch console: a truly impressive illustration of demand outstripping supply.

To date, SCEJ has released no information detailing availability of the loss-leading console, though in order to post a decent set of financials this year, limited PSP stocking would be wise. If Sony were to offer enough units to meet demand, the resulting shareholder storm would be somewhat perturbing, to say the least.

Are you sure that picture isn't a small group of homeless people?

They have homeless people in Japan, right?

Why would you line-up to get a pre-order? That is so sad. I mean I can see why someone would line up to purchase or receive goods/services, but this is really stupid. I realize there are not enough but why would you need the status symbol when you live like a bum.

1. There will not be any good games at launch.

2. There will not be any exclusive movies at launch - No FFVII:AC

3. Do you really need a $350 widescreen mp3 player?

4. Impressing small children and other nerds for 10s loses its caché really quickly

I think you will find that they are in line to receive a service The service of being put on the list for a PSP on launch day.

Thing is, PSP is going to sell out on launch day in Tokyo. So if these folks didn't stand in line now, they'd be standing in line later FOR NOTHING.

This has not proven a hinderance to the launch of any previous console.

3. Do you really need a $350 widescreen mp3 player?

Who doesn't?

Cachet. I think you mean. And impressing small children will never go out of style.

Being on the list does not even guarantee anything. Therefore, they are lining up for the chance to be put on a list that may or may not mean they get a chance to buy a PSP. So if there are no PSP's they are lining up for nothing.

LOL gamecube, virtuaboy, saturn, even the playstation all launched with crap. SMB, SWM, SM64, Halo, Tetris, Soul Calibur help to sell consoles.

LOL with the memory cards its over $400 for at minimum a 32 mb mp3 player. Thats what $50 a song. And why would you need a widescreen display when a small LCD is needed and unavailable.

>>Cachet.
Ya but where are you going to see small children. Do you ride a schoolbus?

Actually, I just realized the reason they are lining up. Reselling on eBay.

I'm sorry, I fail to remember which console launched with Soul Calibur.

Erm, perhaps I'm being thick, but I don't know what point you're trying to make here?
