Final PSP boxart hits Japanese retail

Delicious final packaging revealed

Posted by Staff
Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has released finalised artwork assets for the PSP launch range, showing the retail boxes together for the first time.

As you can see, Ridge Racer, Vampire Saviour, and Metal Gear are all included, as is the latest delicious packaging from Taito’s new art department.

Not really a great deal more to add to this piece, which is a shame as the PSP launch is close enough to smell, sitting in the middle of our December calendar as it is…

Yeah, they look OK. I love the artwork on some of them. But the PSP boxes themselves are way too big... o_O They seem even taller than the PS2/GC/XB cases, although they could just be the same size but narrower. Either way, they are a bizarre shape indeed, for the size of the UMD 'disk'/thing that it's supposed to encase. I would assume the rest of the space is taken up by holding spaces for the infinitely unaffordable Memory Sticks.

Well you can't tell the size from a picture. i think they are probably half the size of a regular DVD case thats probobly why they are so tall. Either way the PSP cases look uninspired. I really wished they tried something new with the layout. But I guess they were thinking on how to not confuse there customers.

I looked at this art a while back in MagicBox.com and I thought they looked too much like The PS2 cases than they should. I really hope they don't look like that over here. I want them to look more stylish.

You've got to remember that when a box is being designed, the company has to consider the retailer's perspective. If the box is too different from other boxes already on their shelves, there is gonna be some shop re-configuration. These days, most software is packaged in DVD style cases. It makes sense to keep new boxes as close to those dimenstions as possible.

Yeah, I'd be surprised if they were anything but standard DVD style and size cases. Lets face it that's what GameCube uses, and its discs are about PSP sized, are they not?

Retailers the world over have invested millions in DVD presentation shop-fittings, they are not going to change them just for a Sony hand-held... and making packaging that won't fit in them could hit Sony's shop floor prescence.

Yeh this is true - OK as long as you get some kind of plastic cases or sleeves for the UMDs (a-la Game Boy or Minidisc). I remember Atari Lynx games didn't have any kind of case apart from the s**tty cardboard boxes, a factor I reckon is entirely to blame for the system's downfall...

...or possibly not
