New PlayStation 2 hardware revealed
Sony Computer Entertainment Japan, in a surprise move, has announced a new model PlayStation 2 console, aimed at a broader media audience.

The new model, snappily called SCPH-50000, will be available in Japan from May 15, and will feature the ability to play a wider array of DVD formats, including DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, all for playback of home-recorded DVD.

More importantly for the regular user, the new machine will come equipped with a low-noise fan and an in-built infra-red port backed by more extensive DVD controls, both essential if the console is to be taken seriously as a DVD player. The remote will also be capable of turning on/off the main power, which is nice.

Sadly, the i-Link port will no longer be included, surely due to the almost complete lack of support by developers.

Surprisingly, despite these additional features, Sony has managed to shed 400g of the weight of the machine – i-Link interfaces can’t be that heavy, can they?

Details on regional encoding for DVD movie playback were not revealed.
