Reports have emerged that Microsoft has made massive cuts to staffing levels within its Xbox division in Japan. Some have hinted that this might be in preparation for a withdrawal from the territory. This is, of course, nonsense.
Although Microsoft’s official line is not to be taken at face value, we can see some truth in the claim that the majority of the lay-offs involved temporary personnel employed to oversee the launch of the machine, and to establish sales and distribution networks for the firm.
“Most of the staff cuts are a result of consolidated marketing and sales efforts,” went the company’s statement. “Microsoft is dedicated to the long-term success of the Xbox in Japan and there are no plans whatsoever to withdraw from the market.”
It is believed that around 200 permanent staff remain at the Tokyo headquarters.
