Sony Computer Entertainment this morning announced that it will again slash the retail asking price of its PlayStation 2 hardware set, this time to £169.99. The new price point comes into effect this Saturday, August 31.
Just hours later, Microsoft responded with its own price cut, reducing the price of their Xbox from £199.99 to £159.99. The cut will, again, be effective from this Saturday, August 31.
Microsoft’s blatant counterattack makes PlayStation 2 the most expensive console on the market, but Sony is unlikely to respond further.
Rumour has it that Microsoft UK is also considering a bundle with a free DVD handset and receiver, though nothing is confirmed at this time.
It is also rumoured that Nintendo may be looking to reduce the price of the GameCube to £99 in the UK, as all three hardware manufacturers gear up to face their first Christmas battle.
Expect some announcements later this week from ECTS and Nintendo’s breakfast press briefing.
