Folks down under will shortly be able to buy Microsoft’s console for just AU$399, making it AU$100 cheaper than a PlayStation 2. This falls in line with the European price cut we reported yesterday: Australia is a PAL territory after all, and it’s only fair that they get the benefit too. As in Europe, Australians who bought an Xbox at the original price, AU$650, will receive a couple of games and an extra controller.
These moves are a reaction to the figures released by Australian games research group Informbd, revealing that the PlayStation 2 is currently out-selling the Xbox by 5/2. Sony’s market-leader has dropped in price since its launch. Originally retailing for AU$749, and now at a very reasonable AU$499, the PS2’s is doing very nicely, thankyou. Microsoft have a lot of catching up to do, sales figures-wise, and in terms of attracting future sales, and not letting recent Xbox purchasers feel left out, they’ve made a good start.
