New model PlayStation 2 looms?

Hard-drive and broadband-ready machine quandary for SCE

New model PlayStation 2 looms?
Following months of speculation it would appear that a new model of Sony’s PlayStation 2 hardware is further away than widely thought. A new standard model, to include integral hard-drive and broadband connectivity, has been rumoured for several months.

Speaking at a recent press conference in Tokyo, Shinichi Okamoto, SCE’s Chief Technical Officer stated that although such a machine could be produced, it would not be viable to market it at this point.

Any such move would vastly increase the price of PS2 hardware, leaving Sony with a choice of evils: either shoulder the difference as a loss-leader, or foist the extra cost upon the consumer.

It would seem that Sony has some serious thinking to do in the coming months. As the Xbox and GameCube start to take a grip on the market, SCE’s ‘pricepoint-versus-technical-performance’ quandary will be subject to close scrutiny.
