Valve Preparing Steam Users for Set Top Box Future?
Valve has jumped in to the realm of TV-based gaming, with the arrival of new Steam feature Big Picture.

With this update, players can connect their PC or Mac to a television screen using an HDMI cable, then press a button to display a new full-screen UI optimised for the... well, the Big Picture. The new feature will be compatible with keyboard and mouse, but is designed for traditional controller use.

"PC gaming continues to be the leading edge of entertainment, whether it's social gaming, MMOs, graphics hardware, free-to-play, or competitive gaming," said Valve's Gabe Newell. "With Big Picture for Steam, we are trying to do our part to give customers and developers what they want - their games, everywhere, optimized for the environment in which they are playing."

Of course, Big Picture is more than just a handy new feature for consumers - it also allows Valve to hedge its bets against the arrival of Windows 8, which Newell has declared to be a disaster for open-source software. Valve is also on the hunt for hardware designers, meaning a Steam set-top box might not be too far away.
