What with Sony dropping the Cell processor from PS4 (here and here) and AMD providing some processing input (here) you might have started to think, "Blimey the PS4, that'll be a PC, right?"If you'd worked out that a personal computer made from readily available parts is actually going to be cheaper than a bespoke piece of hardware. You may also have considered that PC games are, generally, cheaper to develop and sell.
(Okay, so you've also realised that they're easier to pirate unless we get into some heavy Ubisoft and, welll, Sony levels of DRM.)
Well, you're not the only one. Digital Foundry's Richard Leadbetter also has some thoughts (and he's well worth a listen):
"I recently heard from a reputable source that the forthcoming Sony console is "essentially a PC" in terms of its technological make-up and in this sense, an AMD collaboration on the CPU holds many attractions - for the first time since the launch of the original Xbox, we could well be seeing an x86 processor in a console. It may be hard to imagine that the company that brought us the Cell would be embracing PC tech so wholeheartedly, but a look at the make-up of Vita suggests a fundamental shift in the way Sony builds its consoles in the wake of Ken Kutaragi's departure."
