Yay for hardware rumours! Today there have been a load of chinese whispers about the architecture of the next PlayStation console, with "industry sources" close to Kotaku claiming that the PS4 will not feature the Cell processor that powered the PS3.If true, this would seem to make backwards compatibility very difficult, according to a report on
Product Reviews. Of course, should a new chipset be used, it doesn't rule out the possibility of emulation or other methods of allowing PS3 software to run, so take that conjecture with a pinch of salt.
The Kotaku rumour follows yet another rumour published on Forbes that states that Sony is looking to AMD for a PS4 graphics chip. The PlayStation 3 currently uses a graphics chip from rival manufacturer Nvidia. Kotaku also goes in depth with a hell of a load of speculation too, which you can read on its page if you really like that sort of thing.
The best thing about all this? Initial rumours of a Cell-less PS4
began way, way back in December 2009! Some of those industry sources are quick on the ball, it seems.
