Rumour: PlayStation 4 to Drop Cell
Rumours of the death of the Cell processor that sits at the heart of the PS3 have been with us for a while. Now we have a new one regarding the PlayStation 4!

The Digital Newsroom, among others, is reporting "Japanese sources (especially Watch Impress)" stating that "Sony was initially looking towards Intel's Larrabee but would now be focusing on developing an Intel multi-core central unit for the upcoming Playstation 4. Sony would then already be ready to develop new alternatives to the Playstation 3 Cell processor, which is described as very hard to handle by a lot of game developers. IBM will give up the Cell after PowerXCell 8i and will leave Sony in a delicate position, forced to develop the Cell by himself, or choose a new way."

PS4, eh? We can wait... and wait...

So, if IBM leaves, Sony has to develop a new cell all by himself? Sony develops everything himself with only little help from others, and now he also has to develop teh cell?

I think Sony is wise enough to choose the best alternative and if he thinks Intel can help him rule, then he should go along with that.

@Solid Yes, very funny. I see what you did there. Bear in mind that the Internet is a globally thingy and many languages aren't genderless. Given that it's quoted from Digital Newsroom, which has a French language version, it looks he messed up with the translations.

On topic, I thought Cell was being used in other consumer items like Bravia TVs. Why doesn't Sony just crowbar in a half a dozen Cells per console?

IBM, eh. How their partners must love them! They are the ones that walked away from the PowerPC platform, leaving Apple high and dry, and forced to move to Intel. Which turned out to be a good move - since Apple was at this point, selling on the design of it's hardware and its OS.

Having pulled the same stunt AGAIN, I'm guessing it's unlikely IDM will easily find partners for a future processor platform.
