Hold on to your butts - E3 2012 will not only be the event where Nintendo provides concrete launch details of its upcoming Wii U, but Microsoft and Sony will also unveil their Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 successors - making for a three-way battle royale between the platform owners.MCV reports that Microsoft has signalled to its partners that it will formally announce the next Xbox. Rumours of this have been circulating for quite some time.
The real surprise is Sony stepping up to the plate, with the trade publication also revealing that a PlayStation 4 reveal is highly likely - after being burned this generation by Microsoft's market share gains, industry whispers suggest that Sony execs aren't willing to be left behind this time around.
It will be the first time in E3's 17-year history that three rival console manufacturers go head-to-head with brand new consoles. Price and launch details aren't planned for reveal for either the next Xbox or PlayStation come June, but just having them announced is enough to get us all in a tizzy. Happy New Year!
