PlayStation 2 shifts up a gear in Asia: Price cut and new markets detailed inside
Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has announced some surprising news relating to its PlayStation 2 strategy in Asia, revealing a price-cut and its intentions to begin selling PlayStation 2 hardware in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand on December 13, followed by Taiwan on January 24, 2002.

Sony also said that it will drop the price of PlayStation 2 hardware in Japan by 15%, to 29,800 yen, about £170.

The Hong Kong release has surprised many industry onlookers, given Sony’s recent remarks on console viability in the region. "We think it's important to do business where business itself is actually possible," says Kenichi Fukunaga, spokesman for Sony Computer Entertainment Japan. "We're thinking about selling to Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia and South Korea, but we have to make sure illegal copies won't go around."

This was just thought to be market speculation until today, with any potential move made by Sony expected in the medium to long term.
