Although Monster Hunter Portable 3rd continues to do great things for the PSP, hardware sales of Sony’s handheld have slumped for the first time in several months. The Japanese Hardware Chart (3rd - 9th January 2011, courtesy Media Create) puts the PSP in fifth place overall, where it has usually enjoyed life at the top.
Hardware Chart - Home Console
PS3: 59,612
Wii: 56,547
360: 3,859
PS2: 2,547
Hardware Chart - Handheld
DSi LL: 44,122
DSi: 38,486
PSP: 28,757
DS Lite: 4,510
PSP Go: 4,084
Instead, the PlayStation 3 has topped the all-format chart this week, beating the Wii by a couple thousand units. The news of the 3DS launch certainly hasn’t affected DSi sales, as the super-size edition takes the handheld side of things with a healthy 44,000 units.
Perhaps the PSP-3000 model has hit a sales peak and everyone interested in buying Monster Hunter has already done so? Possibly. Maybe everyone's just waiting for the PSP Monster Hunter Portable 3rd bundle. It'll be interesting though, if rumours of a PSP2 announcement will have a negative impact.
