Yesterday Sony told the world that it had sold 4.1 millon Move controllers. Today Wedbush Morgan analyst, Michael Pachter put that figure - when actually sold to consumers - closer to 2.5million. Sony has now 'clarified' it previous statement, which went out as a general press release. The company has used Gamestop to feed the news, with the following statement, "While we don't disclose our exact sell-through number, the key is that our retailers continue to ask for more Move units and are taking every unit we can supply them with based on their sales."
In short, the figure does indeed relate to the number of Moves that went to retail outlets - or that are booked to go to retail outlets.
This is all very strange and rather desperate. It would also appear to differ from the way in which SCEE rather than Sony globally tots up figures.
Back in 2009 when there was another 'confusion' regarding PS3 'sales' versus 'shipped'
SCEE told SPOnG, "We count installed base differently to (SCEE). We count the number of units in the hands of consumers.
"We calculate our install base by 'sell through' and have done for the last four years I believe", we asked for a little additional clarification...
"We classify 'sell through' as the number of units consumers have actually purchased from retail. 'Sell in' is the number of units we've sold to retail."
Wouldn't it be nice if Sony calculated its figures in the same way, worldwide?
