Sure, Sony already told the world that it has "sold" 4.1 million PlayStation Move controllers, putting it some distance ahead of the 2.5 million Kinects sold worldwide. But after clarifying that it simply meant units shipped, not sold, the race is on to guess just how many Moves Sony has really sold to customers. As always, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter thinks he has the answer. He described the actual number of PlayStation Moves sold as neck-and-neck with Microsoft's motion camera device.
"I understand that they sold through around one million through the end of October (tracking NPD results and extrapolating for Europe), and it's reasonable that with the Japanese launch they have sold through another 1.5 million in November, but I'd peg the sell through number at closer to 2.5 million, or exactly on par with Kinect, albeit over a longer time frame," Pachter told
Eurogamer.
"If sell-through is the 2.5 million that I estimate, it's logical that shipments would be 4.1 million cumulatively, as demand in December is likely to be higher than the 1.5 million I assumed were sold in November. Yes, impressive, yet likely below the reported figure."
Impressive, yes, but considering that PlayStation Move launched in late September, compared to Kinect which was only released last month and it appears that, should Pachter be correct, Microsoft's device is selling at a greater speed than Sony's. The analyst takes it one step further and states that he believes the Xbox 360 has the edge this Christmas.
"I think that Microsoft still has an advantage at holiday, with a larger installed base of consoles, more momentum, and a slightly more unique experience. So I would expect Kinect to outsell Move in December."
Dude be crystal ballin'. What do you think, readers?
