Contrary to reports that Microsoft's motion-control device, Kinect, had been hacked mere days ago, the company has now issued a statement to explain that this is not the case. The statement explains that Kinect for the Xbox 360 has not been hacked in any way because neither the software or the hardware that are part of Kinect having not been modified. Further clarity is provided with the explanation that drivers have been created that allow other devices to interface the motion controller. Furthermore, the use of said drivers and the using Kinect with devices other than the Xbox 360, remains unsupported.
MIT-backed organisation Adafruit had offered a $2000 reward to the first individual who could hack Kinect and separate it from the Xbox 360. It appears somebody
was successful in doing so. When asked for a comment at the time, an official spokesman for Microsoft explained that "Microsoft does not condone the modification of its products."
Is Microsoft trying to quell the acknowledgement that Kinect has been hacked? Or is it just a matter of time before we'll be able to use the device on more than just the Xbox 360? Any thoughts, feel free to post them down below.
