Who's ready for a price cut? According to a "senior publishing source" (via MCV), all three major hardware companies are planning to slash the cost of their home consoles - with announcements expected as early as next month's E3.According to Sony and Nintendo, however, there won't be any such announcements.
The source predicts that Sony will introduce an "entry-level" PlayStation 3 priced at around £200, which will aim to "complement its existing high-end high-capacity offerings." The console will come with one controller and a lower capacity hard drive (40GB - 60GB).
Meanwhile, Microsoft is "less likely" to cut the RRP of the Xbox 360 and instead add to the current console package's value by bundling a Natal peripheral in every box. This is expected to cost around £130-150, with a 'Natal-free' SKU priced below £100 is also rumoured.
Finally, the source says that Nintendo may well drop the price of the Wii in order to compete with Sony's PlayStation Move and Microsoft's Natal devices, which will turn the motion-sensing controller market into a bit of a bloodbath.
Price drops are said to be expected because of a "busy" fourth quarter in the games industry. But then it doesn't take a genius to know that the Autumn and Winter periods are the most hectic in the gaming calendar.
For the record, Sony and Nintendo have responded to these claims to MCV. Nintendo said, "This is total rumour and speculation and we currently have no plans to cut the price of Wii in the UK." While Sony just laughed, apparently.
