Sony's Tretton: We Worked with Natal Tech Pre EyeToy
Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton recently slammed Microsoft's Natal device for being technology that followed the EyeToy – yet praised Nintendo for advancing the concept with the Wii Remote. During this he also stated, " It's (Natal) certainly technology that we worked with before; we had the experience with the PS2 and EyeToy."

In an interview, the exec spoke of the origins of motion-based gaming; “Everyone has a different perspective on it - our perspective is we introduced motion gaming with the EyeToy for PlayStation 2. It was an incredible experience to be able to stand in front of the TV with nothing in your hands, and see yourself on the TV and interact with the objects there.”

Tretton admitted that the EyeToy had hit a stumbling block by providing a “limited” gaming experience, but said that this knowledge helped the company refine its approach with the upcoming PlayStation 3 controller, which works in tandem with the updated Eye camera.

“We feel all that experience and all that learning, has put us in the perfect position,” Tretton explained. “We're able to take advantage of the camera, take advantage of the ability to identity yourself in 3-D space, but then have controls in hand to do things like shooting and swinging an object, and much more accurately than ever done before.”

Of course, comparisons have been made with Nintendo's own Wii Remote – but Jack had nothing but good things to say about the Mario company; “You have to tip your hat to Nintendo for introducing the motion gaming using their controllers [and for] doing it in a more social fashion.”

What about Microsoft's bodyflail-tastic Natal, though? “I'm not an expert on Microsoft's technology, but we all know that it was not homegrown. It's certainly technology that we worked with before; we had the experience with the PS2 and EyeToy.”

Oh snap. Read the full interview at Fast Company, where Tretton also declares that “every year is the Year for the PlayStation 3.” Bless him.

It takes people this long to realize this, meanwhile does anybody mention the poor researcher that probably did this in the 80's or even 70's, no? As far as motion goes, I remember detecting motion controllers back in the 80's for the black and white Machintosh, latter also sold for PC gaming. Old technology, thankfully it's time has come. MS is missing the boat a bit though, a little upgrade to processor and memory (USB3 everywhere as well), and the GPU spec to general purpose computing, would do wonders to knock the PS3 around for years. So it is going to be 360 or WiiHD for me I think.
