On the back of the continuing success of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Nintendo's little white box maintains its lead over all other platforms as the best selling console for the week in Japan (28th December 2009 - 3rd January 2010).
It's at the cost of a post-holiday sales drop though, with the Wii selling over 50,000 units less than the week before. The closest contender, Sony's PlayStation 3, is still a good couple of metaphorical miles away with over 114,000 units sold, but it otherwise enjoys a slight sales increase.
The Xbox 360 sees marginal gains, and the PlayStation 2 is making something of an outstanding comeback from a few weeks ago, when it was selling a mere 2,000-odd units and it looked like it was finally running out of chart steam. Apparently not.
In the handheld chart, the PSP gets a bit of a kick up the arse, most likely due in part to the sales boost of Sega's Phantasy Star Portable 2, which hit #9 in the Media Create software Top 10. Sony's UMD platform is the only portable seeing any sales gains this week, with the DSi a good 40,000 units behind and the PSP Go coming down from its seasonal high.
