Fanboys, start your engines! Wedbush Morgan analyst, Michael Pachter has stated that the PlayStation 3 will be second only to the Nintendo's Wii in the global race for console dominance by 2015. This will be down to the PS3s homeland advantage, and Blu-ray.

A new WM report states, "We think that the PS3 will capture significant market share, primarily due to Sony’s victory in the high definition DVD format war, and will end up in second place by 2015.

"Although Microsoft’s Xbox 360 enjoyed a first mover advantage, we think that its market position will fade to third place due to lack of penetration in Japan."

In the medium term, Wedbush is prepared to put figures to predictions:

"We expect the Wii to capture 49% share of the U.S. and European market by the end of 2009, followed by the Xbox 360 at 29% and the PS3 at 22%.

"By the end of 2011 (the extent of our current forecast), we see Nintendo 'winning' the console war by maintaining its share, with 48% of this market. We expect Sony to pull even with Microsoft, each with 26% market share."

But, remember, these guys are analysts who are close to the industry and, hey, no one is a loser.

"Notwithstanding the projected finish, we truly believe that all three manufacturers should be considered 'winners', with Microsoft selling twice as many Xbox 360s as Xboxes and building a robust Xbox Live business, and with the other two companies generating significant profits from their respective shares. These estimates do not include console sales in Japan, which we expect to be dominated by Nintendo with over 65% market share through 2011."

There's everyone's a winner.

Of course PS3 will beat the Xbox 360 ... by 2015 there won't be an Xbox360 - like somebody else's puking baby, Microsoft will have disowned 360 the moment the Xbox 720 is announced.

I don't think Japan's the big deal any more. Granted, it'll always have an influence, but the global market is far bigger. The US is the biggest gaming market now, isn't it? Even die-hard Jap devs like Capcom are developing games with greater Western sensibilities. I'm no fan boy (I'm lucky enough to have both 360 and a PS3), but honestly think that M$ has done enough to stay ahead of Sony in this generation. People have started to see through Sony's 'techno bluff' - the same stuff that sadly led to the demise of the frankly awesome and much missed Dreamcast (RIP) as people waited for the 'Emotion Engine'. What guff. Sony tried it again with PS3 and Home, but I think when gamers started to see inferior ports, a half baked LIVE-imitator with Second Life graphics and only a couple of real PS3 original gems (KZ2, LBP, MGS4), they realised that Sony's machine isn't everything that it was cracked up to be. It's a potentially potent, costly, hard-to-develop-for piece of kit with a few 'must-have' games and slightly inferior third party ports - not unlike Sega's Saturn. Go figure.

In short - if Sony DO pull ahead of M$, it'll be a sad day and a victory for spin and hollow marketing. In the words of Johnny Rotten, "Ever had the feeling that you've been had?"

Who the hell comes up with these statistics? I don't think anyone would care how the PS3 will bea the XBOX 360 in 2015 because most gamers woud off moved onto the next generation by then.

2015 - just in time for the launch of the PS4?!!?!!? And about 2 years after Microsoft launches the Xbox 720.

Who cares? By 2015 we will be playing whatever replaced 360. The release of a new Xbox or even a natal upgraded box will hold the line for a year or two until something new comes out. By 2015 the new Xbox will probably be 2 years old.
