SPOnG has received news from THQ that can just about be called good, if you squint at it in just the right light. While the publisher has confirmed to us that staff have, indeed, been laid off at its Big Huge Games studio, this is not because the developer is being completely closed.
"We continue to pursue a sale of Big Huge Games", a THQ rep told SPOnG. "Yesterday, some of the staff were notified that they were not going to be part of the future direction of the studio. We are not providing exact headcounts at this time."
It
emerged yesterday that employees at Big Huge Games had been laid off, but it was unclear whether this meant the studio was being shut or just pared back.
Back in March a statement from THQ told us that Big Huge Games would be shut if a sale could not be completed "in the near future". That was a little over two weeks ago.
The developer, which was only bought by THQ early last year, is known for games such as
Rise of Nations and
Age of Empires. Its most recent output was
Catan for XBLA.
