Earlier this month SCEE president, David Reeves suggested that PlayStation 3 had a 300,000 unit lead over Xbox 360 in what he called Europe.
We suggested that he might mean PAL territories.
His statement came following Microsoft announcing that it had "outsold PlayStation 3 across the entire region and in particular has seen significant gains in markets like France, Spain and Italy, where it has been outselling PlayStation 3 week after week."
The region in question was Europe - although we suggested it was probably Europe, the Middle East and Asia (
EMEA).
Today a new figure - a nice round one of one million -
has been reported as the Xbox 360 lead over PlayStation 3 in Europe. This round figure apparently comes from Gfk Chart-Track statistics and refers to 'installed base totals' as well as 'like-for-like sales of console hardware across October and November' for the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy.
It is also claimed that, despite the sales lead, PS3 is catching up.
SPOnG spoke with a Gfk Chart-Track spokesman this afternoon regarding the validity of the figures for those regions in the time period indicated and taking into consideration whether these were indicative of sell through or shipped out.
The response from the Gfk Chart-Track spokesman was, "I don't want a comment without knowing more about it."
We await more information on the ongoing PS3 vs Xbox 360 'War in Europe!' (or PAL territories or EMEA... but those don't sound quite so grand).
