Sony's Tretton: 160-Plus PS3 Games This Year!!
Jack Tretton - Sony Computer Entertainment America's president and CEO - has apparently stated a that there will be massively more PlayStation 3 games available in the next two to three weeks than we'd been expecting.

Speaking to The Mercury News, Tretton said:
"I think the fruits of that labor is 160-plus games this year for PlayStation 3, 23 developers making games for PlayStation 3."

The fruits of the labour he's referring is SCEA's relationship with third-party game developers. The 160 number would, in SPOnG's thinking, mean some 60 more games than currently exist on SCEA's own website (listed below). But even that list has some currently non-existent 'games' such as Home (40 on the list) and LittleBigPlanet (45).

Maybe The Mercury News has misprinted the number? Maybe Tretton's confused the number with the number of companies he says are backing Blu-ray:

"OK, well I’ll give you a couple of statistics that has me fairly confident: 160 CE companies backing Blu-ray, seven of the eight major studios backing Blu-ray, you’ve got Blu-ray content outselling HD-DVD two-to-one, and by an even greater margin worldwide."

Maybe he means fiscal year 2007/2008, which would end in March 2008. In which case he'd be directly contradicting his boss, Kaz Hirai, who said back in June that 200 retail games and 180 download-only games will be released to the year ending next March".

We've asked Sony for comment.

Elsewhere in the interview, Tretton has a pop at Activision's chief executive, Bobby Kotick, and his helpful advice on PS3 pricing:

"...I’m surprised by it, because I would never venture to suggest what software publishers should price their software at. So I don’t think it’s appropriate for them to suggest what hardware should be priced at."

So, a nice piece of inter-industry bitch-slapping, but nothing you wouldn't have predicted. The chances of a spat between Activision and Sony that would lead to either of them refusing to work with each other is highly unlikely.

Something else to keep your eyes out for is Jack's prediction for judging a failed console:

"So I think it’s a little premature really to make any predictions. I think if you’re a failed format, you’ll know within three years, and you’ll be out of the business within five."

We hope to be seeing Jack and everybody else on the PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 teams for a healthy party in 2012!

Most of those games listed are cross platform, some I noticed have not even been released yet and the Sony exclusives arent even in the charts AND those games imo dont exactly stand out as being anything amazing (and I mean the exclusives).

I think once MGS4 and FF13 are released they will hold the charts very well for now I dont think the PS3 platform as much of anything that is appealling otherwise the charts would of course reflect on that.
