Japan: DS Back On Top
Following a few weeks suffering beneath the PSP, the Nintendo DS has reclaimed its place at the top of the Japanese hardware Chart.

The DS claims a narrow lead, however, with Nintendo's handheld selling 87,445, just 550 more than the PSP's 86,895. The PSP has been trumping the DS in recent weeks in Japan thanks to the powerhouse combination of the launch of the Slim 'n' Lite and the release of Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core.

The DS is the only hardware to see a rise in sales, however, with everything else seeing fewer units shipped than last week.

The Wii is still the best selling home console, but it is now selling less than double the numbers of the PS3 compared to a one-time ratio of six to one.

Xbox 360 sales, meanwhile, drop back down to 1,547 following a boost thanks to Halo 3.

You can see the latest weekly hardware sales figures in full below.

DS - 87,445
PSP - 86,895
Wii - 20,704
PS3 - 10,822
PS2 - 10,446
Xbox 360 - 1,547

We know that PSP got a huge sales boost because of the Slim and Crisis Core, which saw it outsell the DS by a huge margin. Now that the sales have steadied we know how much PSP can sell without being on the same wave of hype a few weeks ago. So still selling almost as many units as the DS is a good sign for the PSP. DS outsells everything in Japan anyway, and to see any handheld compete at its level is good for the industry and gamers. It's a sign of success for the system, considering its Sony first real attempt to penetrate the handheld market long dominated by Nintendo. Everything needs competition to keep improving.
