Pre-Christmas war heats up

Microsoft: Sony Charges For Tech You Don't Need
Sony is forcing unwanted technology down the throats of its customers via the PlayStation 3, says Microsoft's Dan Cornelius, U.K. marketing manager of Xbox 360 hardware.

Cornelius writes the following, on industry mag MCV's site:

"Sony is requiring a novice gamer to buy into things like Blu-ray and wireless gaming by default. The 360 Core is about giving people the same experience as our other consoles, but letting them upgrade when they feel comfortable doing so – and not to foot a huge bill for technology they don’t need."

When talking about the Wii, however, Cornelius displays less bravado. "We now have a very powerful, high definition console at the same price point as Wii. That will really open the door to a broad audience going into Christmas", he said. So far, so brash.

Obviously sensitive to the fact the Wii is outselling the 360, though, he adds, "However, to a certain extent, Wii is tapping into a different consumer."

Sony's response would no doubt pull out its 'future-proof' card, telling us that it's supplying us with technology that will be essential in a few years... TODAY! The fact that a Core 360 can now be picked up for less than half the price of the PS3 by customers not interested in all the flashing lights, however, is difficult to ignore.

Let the pre-Xmas hostilities commence!

Microsoft would say that, because they want to tuck you up making you have to pay extra for the 20gb hard drive (£70), wireless adapter (£60), wireless controller (£32), and HD DVD drive (£130) which when added together comes to just around £290! so how is that cost effective?? of course the cost of a core 360 being £180 makes a total of around £470!

Microsoft have been using the "forcing technology" line since the PS3 launched. Even though it's true to an extent, you'd have thought they could have come up with something new to use when comparing themselves against their opponents.

Of course, they don't accuse Nintendo of "forcing" wireless gaming onto the hapless suckers that buy the Wii do they?

What they are getting at is "our box is cheaper than the PS3" but they don't want to use the word "cheap" since that, well, cheapens the overall "value offering" of the 360.

Why don't Microsoft stop attacking Sony and play their larger software library hand? They have more than enough exclusive games to make it stick without descending into the bickering over "future proofing" versus "choice" that we've been enduring for the last two years.

Sony is forcing me to use wireless? strange because i thought i was using an ethernet cable until recently, because the Wii forced me to get wireless, what with it's lack of ethernet port.

Sony is forcing Blu-Ray on me? funny I remember WANTING it, and it being a a selling point of the PS3 for me.

can MS talk anymore more s**t? they sure as hell know how to make it.

It all reads fine and dandy until the dreaded word "Core".
Core means bargain-bin, absolute minimum, no-frills, and is in need of several upgrades to even become useful.
And they try and sell it alongside a machine called "Elite".

Oh my, are Microsoft on the ball about this one!

Damn right Sony sell you hardware you don't need - you want a console? You get one with the 360!

It has everything! The box, the graphics card, the processor, the flashing lights.. What do you mean you want it all together in a reliable way that won't die within warranty? You don't need that!

And who needs heatsinks and cooling fans anyway?

And here's another thing that's great about Microsoft that Sony don't give you, and Microsoft give you free - flashing red rings! Come and get them while they're hot!

Sorry all you M$ haters out there but what the guy said is 100% true! Im a student and when I bought my 360 (premium) a few months after launch I could barely stretch to that. A year or so on and Ive got the HD drive (£99) and the wireless adapter (£49) [if you quote prices, quote what you pay!]. So yeah Id say Ive now paid the same price as a PS3 to get an equivalent 360. However, I could never have stretched to £400 odd straight out. I still cant now!

Seriously as well... Blu-ray is NOT a good thing to be forcing upon you all. If it loses the format war, which it has a 50:50 chance of doing, then you just wasted all your money on it! Oh and dont be fooled by Sony PR saying that you need the extra data for games, its not true. If you actually look into the real reason the seek times on Blu-ray due to its method of reading disks is slower (it can be argued its a better method for various reasons, read about it Im not explaining, its complicated), so they duplicate the same data all over the disk to improve the loading times. So the extra capacity needed is solely to make up for the failings of Blu-ray. Its good old spin turning a negative into a positive! Any good developer will be able to fit any next gen game onto a 9gb DVD if they have to (just look at BioShock!).

Just to end my favourite console at the moment is my Wii, so no Im not a 360 fanboy.

total BS. MS caters to the uneducated. Doing any kind of math with prove that the 'x' in 'xbox' means extra. Extra for online play, extra for charge and play, extra for wireless controllers, extra for wireless internet connections, extra for wireless products (headsets), no flash - sd card support for any type of multimedia device unless you pony up extra cash to buy adapters. At least the PS3 can reuse PS2 peripherals like USB headsets, controllers (needs adapter), PC devices like Blue Tooth wireless built in, not for 360 though. Call me a Sony fanboy bacuase I care enough to research the whole price not just an entry unit that doesn't do much, no HD? Whats with that? RRoD, DRM 360 looses everytime to the PS3 period.

My console's better than your console. And my car is faster. And my house bigger. etc. There, are we done?

Yeah but my house was a "Core" that I bought on the cheap and now I'm building an extension and patio onto it until it's as big (and more expensive) than yours.

Microsoft, Sony forces nothing on anyone FFS, everyone has the choice of what they want to buy, and a lot of people have choose not to buy the PS3 that should be good enough for you,

Yep- good points lol BUT, The online play is FAR SUPERIOR, and really worth the money, not a half- ass copy of live silver. And, I have a PC ( as most people do, ) so dont need to display photos, I have a TV so dont need a console for that, a Radio, so dont need a console for that etc.etc. I WANT GAMES
AND I CAN afford any console, so my only consideration is the games. Here, Sony loses out Big Time. For a games player, there is only one logical choice.- 360. Xbox live is far and away the best service, there are more games out on 360 by far, and, most of those that have not been released yet are on 360. The release schedule for PS3 is abysmal after the amount on PS2. Also, all the best stuff is on 360. No wonder PS3 is not selling. Until Sony realise that a game console needs lots of good games, the situation wont improve for them.

The original comment is nothing to do with a "my consoles better than yours" argument, that was not the reason for making it, the reason was that it pisses me right off that idiots like Dan Cornelius have to resort to such remarks because they can't think of anything intelligent to say so they have to try and think and of a way to bash the opposition, I do own both 360 premium and a PS3 and in my opinion and it is only an opinion the PS3 is very good value for money in that respect.
