Japanese Hardware Charts: Sony Ups Its Game
According to MediaCreate's latest figures, while Nintendo's Wii and DS continue to dominate the Japanese hardware chart, the PS3's sales show signs of recovery, breaking that 'psychological' 10,000 units per week' barrier we reported on June 6th this year .

In the most recent weekly sales period, the PS3 racked up 11,914 sales, while the PSP's sales were up 5,357 on the previous week (taking it to 38,305) and the PS2 improved on last week by 4,354 (boosting it to 16,316).

The news will no doubt offer some mild relief for Sony. In June the PS3 was out sold by the Wii six-to-one in Japan, while the company has announced a de-facto price cut for the hardware.

While Sony maybe happier with its lot, the DS and Wii still lead the way, with the handheld notching up 157,435 sales and the Wii finding its way into 73,919 new homes.

The 360 continues to languish in the dust behind its counterparts, with just 3,154 units sold.

Here's the chart in full:

DS Lite - 157,435
Wii - 73,919
PSP - 38,305
PlayStation 2 - 16,316
PlayStation 3 - 11,914
Xbox 360 - 3,154
Game Boy micro - 377
Game Boy Advance SP - 179

are sony really gonna be proud of those figures? sure the xbox its performance crap in the land of the rising sun but its a US machine unlike the PS3 which should be selling far more than that, i mean an 8 year old console is outselling the so called next big thing!

ok sony heres a tip, for the ps4 and psp2 try not market it based on movie playback capability no one bought a ps2 to play dvds! and no one wants a ps3 to play bluray! oh yeah and try prepping some killer games for at least 6 months after launch, wheres FFXIII, Wheres GT5, Wheres MGS4, i suspect two of them are being prepped for 360! and one is just going down the road of GTmobile!

So what if the 360 isnt doing well over there?, games like music & film differ in there sucess due to diffrent tastes & cultures, doesnt make it a failure, if we all liked the same things then we'd all love David Hasslehof's music like the germans,... then where would we be!?.....

360 is changing japan's gaming habits slowly, making them more diverse than they were before. They never used to like FPS games, but I think that's changing slowly. With GRAW2, Rainbow Six and Hitman Blood Money getting good Famitsu scores, 360 is offering those that got Blue Dragon something else.

Didn't someone say Japanese gamers are becoming bored with jrpgs? If this is the case they have something else good to play now.

i think its the pick up and play factor, you cant really turn on ff12 and have a quick 30min play session, but you can jump into R6, Or graw and have a quick online session or play quick level, i suppose also why the Wii may be very popular along with the DS, times are changing and people have less time, i find the mojarity of games i play, i play for a short while, long gone are the days of playing FFVII for 3 days non stop, but i still enjoy my rpgs when i get time i usally take a couple of weeks off after xmas from work and ask the mrs for some rpg i really want and get right into but for the rest of the year i hardly get tmie to enjoy them,

this years xmas list, blue dragon and eternal sonata oo cant wait

It could be the time factor too. Explains the DS doing so well.

What will be interesting is seeing how well GTAIV sells in japan. This style of sandbox gameplay hasn't been available to them before, possibly only Shenmue or Yakuza got close in comparison.

i think i remember reading that san andreas after a huge wait got released and did very well, so possibly GTAIV could have a big impact along with Halo, also i cant wait for banjo kazoozie with the orignal doing extremly well in japan on the n64 this also may shift a few units for M$??

Well, the thing with sandbox gameplay...who really was first because with some nitfiddeling you could say the first Legend of Zelda was the one or it could even go way more back.

Or are we only counting 3D-games? Then wasn't Ocerina of Time not very go-to-anything-you-see kinda? A lot of OoT-reviews did mention that vast open world as one of it's features. You just couldn't steal cars or anything.
