Wii - in the shops today.
It’s finally here. You can now, should you be jammy as a dodger, head out to a local out-of-town supermarket, electrical retailer or heavily branded toy superstore and pick-up your pre-ordered Nintendo Wii. If you were daft enough to not pre-order then rest assured, SPOnG will be bringing you the latest news of how to get one very shortly.

Why? Because we have been speaking to Nintendo this morning and it’s promised that it will be updating us later in the day as to stock availability across the UK.

SPOnG's team of reviewers has managed to put in some serious playtime on all the launch titles (play is, after all, a serious matter!) and we are more than happy to report that there is a good handful of solid, more-than-worth-your-hard-earned games now on the shelves.

SPOnG would recommend that, along with the copy of Wii Sports you get bundled with the £179 Wii, you also pick up a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (duh!), Call of Duty 3, and Madden ‘07

Also available are: Red Steel, Wii Play (which for around £35 includes an extra Wii Remote which equals a no-brainer), Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz and, for some kerrr-azy minigame action while you wait for Wario next year, Rayman Raving Rabbids.

We can take or leave all the rest. In fact, we can most definitely leave some of the worst launch titles we’ve been unfortunate to play which include the execrable: Happy Feet, Monster 4 x 4 World Circuit and GT Pro World Circuit.

You’ll also need to spend an extra £20 or so for a proper TV cable. Unless that is, you are playing your Wii on a ten-year old portable in the kitchen. If that is the case then you have our pity.

Nintendo’s UK bossman David Yarnton reiterated last night that the company is well on track to hit the planned four million consoles worldwide by the end of the year, and six million by next March. Indeed, David was clearly having the time of his life last night as he spent a lot of time chatting with the punters in the queue outside, all of whom were eager to hear more about what Nintendo has in store for Wii in 2007.

SPOnG is most looking forward to ‘the big three’ next year – WarioWare: Smooth Moves, Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime: Corruption.
