Industrial Light and Magic selects SOFTIMAGE|XSI for next-generation 3-D production pipeline
Softimage Co., a subsidiary of Avid Technology, Inc., today announced that the world's leading effects company, Industrial Light and Magic (ILM, a division of Lucas Digital Ltd. LLC), has chosen to place the SOFTIMAGE|XSI software, the industry's leading nonlinear 3-D production environment, at the core of its next-generation animation production pipeline.

Building on its long-standing relationship with Softimage, ILM chose the SOFTIMAGE|XSI software after using it in production and experiencing the benefits of its superior creative toolset, open scripting environment, unique animation mixer, seamless integration of the mental ray v.3.1 render product, flexible nonlinear architecture and highly-productive workflow capabilities.

A long-time customer of Softimage, ILM has been working with Softimage's award-winning 3-D developers for the last 10 years to produce the groundbreaking effects and character animation in feature films such as Academy Award nominated Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones, as well as Minority Report, The Mummy Returns, the Men In Black series, the Jurassic Park trilogy and many others.

During this time, the two companies have collaborated on a number of innovative features and enhancements, which have since become part of Softimage's standard product offerings.

"Softimage has been a great partner of ours right from the beginning. Over the years, the people at Softimage have consistently been receptive and responsive to our needs and suggestions, helping us to regularly increase the realism and complexity of our imagery. I feel like they're really a part of our team," said Cliff Plumer, ILM's chief technology officer.

"With our many technical and creative innovations over the years, ILM and Softimage have together helped to drive the evolution of visual effects," said Michael Stojda, managing director of Softimage. "We're honored ILM has adopted SOFTIMAGE|XSI in its next-generation production pipeline and, with our shared philosophy and goal of continuing to push the envelope, Softimage is committed to providing ILM and the professional animation and effects community with groundbreaking tools and technology to enable them to captivate audiences for many years to come."

Since its release less than three months ago, version 3.0 of the SOFTIMAGE|XSI creative environment --the fourth major release in just over two years-- has already received numerous awards and experienced accelerated growth in the film, games, television and education markets

"SOFTIMAGE|XSI is rapidly becoming the backbone of many production pipelines because of the significant productivity and financial gains it offers without compromising creativity and flexibility," says Olivier Ozoux, director of special projects at Softimage. "The special projects group has been assisting ILM to quickly and efficiently deploy SOFTIMAGE|XSI within their pipeline and we are looking forward to seeing what the combination of ILM's talent and creativity together with the SOFTIMAGE|XSI nonlinear 3-D production environment and open scripting architecture will produce in this decade."
