Blockbuster is fighting back against movie streaming upstarts Netflix and LoveFilm, by turning up the heat on its traditional Blu-ray and DVD rental offering. A new initiative will see a selection of films available exclusively at Blockbuster for a period of three weeks. The Change-Up,
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,
Drive,
Friends With Benefits,
Fright Night,
Abduction and
Warrior are the first of these films to have a timed exclusive. The cost of rental is £2.99.
It'a a highly competitive angle, but probably a short-term solution as Netflix and LoveFilm begin to show off its streaming convenience and builds its library. Of course, Netflix is the worst offender for its back catalogue, with even Gears of War creator
Cliff Bleszinski bemoaning the service for its lack of new titles.
No doubt Blockbuster has some kind of streaming service in the pipeline too, but for now the company is keen for you to avoid using that ethernet cable on your PS3 and Xbox 360 and instead take advantage of the disc drive for renting movies.
