Summary

This year saw the 21st Wrestlemania take place in Los Angeles. The spectacular nature of Pro Wrestling and its legions of armchair fans have ensured a steady stream of wrestling titles over the years, so it’s no surprise that the 21st Wrestlemania will be commemorated with a video game. It’s no surprise, either, that the game will be published by THQ, who have a long history of commitment to bringing grapple-‘em-ups to our shores. The game has been developed by Studio Gigante, who set out their stall as purveyors of Xbox fighting games two years ago with the release of the accomplished Tao Feng, the Kung Fu game where fighters got clothes ripped, noses bloodied and even limbs broken.

An impressive Xbox Live feature list is becoming a staple in games for the Microsoft console these days, and WWE Wrestlemania 21 doesn’t disappoint in the online department. Once you’ve customised your wrestler from a whole selection of options (not just appearance, but moves, costumes and dramatic entrances) take him online and show everyone who the daddy really is. Up to four players can climb in the ring together online, and there is of course voice support so you can trash talk your opponents. A ‘Create-a-Belt’ mode allows you to make your own belt and send out a challenge to all in the online community to try and take it from you if they dare.

Gameplay-wise, a Pro-Reversal system has been implemented, assigning a certain counter to every offensive move. This is a licensed game, expect to be immersed in a true to life depiction of the world of WWE wrestling, with motion captured moves, and voiceovers from your favourite wrestlers. Speaking of favourite wrestlers, yours is bound to be in here, with the roster divided up into four large categories: RAW, Smackdown, Divas and Legends: Val Venis, Rick Flair, The Undertaker, Rey Mysterio, Miss Jackie, Jazz, Brett ‘Hitman’ Hart, Andre the Giant and the Rock are just a handful of the guys and gals you can get to grips with. It’s time to dust off your lycra, oil up, and go to war!
