Summary

Ask any PC owner the two most popular genres in online games, and it’s pretty likely they’d answer with first person shooters and role play games, specifically of the massively multiplayer variety.

It was only going to be a matter of time before the two came together in some kind of fusion. Now, it seems, that time has come, with the launch of Battleground Europe: World War II Online from GMX Media. An ambitious project to say the least, Battleground Europe has as its aim nothing less than the recreation of the second World War, online.

Wartime western Europe between 1939 and 1942 is the stage for this experience, and the action takes place in a huge game world measuring 350,000 square miles. Choose your side – Axis or Allies – and take to the battlefield in a conflict featuring thousands of players on each side. FPS fans needn’t worry – the action is from a first person perspective throughout. It’s not just as a grunt on the ground that you can take part, either. Taking a leaf out of the Battlefield series’ book, the game allows you to drive tanks and trucks, or join the Luftwaffe or RAF and take to the skies. You can even make a life for yourself as a sailor in charge of naval vessels.

But it’s not just another WWII title in a market already full to bursting. As we’ve mentioned, this is a game with plenty of RPG elements to get your teeth into. Get ready for character development you’d associate more with games like World of Warcraft. Tying in nicely with the subject matter, your character can progress along career paths and become a war hero or commander. The game is given structure with player missions, and realism with cutting edge physics and damage modelling. History buffs will be kept happy by the game’s range of more than 80 authentic weapons, from rifles and machine guns to tanks and fighter planes. It’s not as if there’s any shortage of MMORPGs out there, or WWII shooting games. But Battleground Europe takes both genres and, impressively, does something new with them.
