Summary
Activision's O2 division, responsible for well known extreme sports titles such as Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX and the great Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series, has also developed a game of a sport we don't see a great deal of in video games - surfing. Boasting the Kelly Slater name, Activision's attempt at Pro Skater on water places it at the top of the virtual surfer leader board.
Officially licensed, Pro Surfer features the most prominent figures in the sport, such as Rob Machado, Kalani Robb, Lisa Andersen, Bruce Irons and Tom Curren. Developer Treyarch has even gone to the trouble to give each character real-life likenesses, signature moves, personalities and characteristics.
Pro Surfer spans some 13 of the most popular surf spots across the globe, with genuine landmarks and hazards that make a convincing game world just that little bit more familiar. But hey, let's get to what really matters in a surfing game - waves. Where many developers have failed to capture the realism of waves, Pro Surfer prevails. It might not visually live up to the standards set in Nintendo's WaveRace series, but in terms of dynamics, it does manage to recreate the characteristics and fluid motions of waves very well. This is also reflected in gameplay, as players can actually feel like they're riding on water, and not on a sea of polygons.
Your objective in Pro Surfer is similar to other games in the extreme sports genre - to execute a combination of tricks within a given time in an attempt to score as many points as possible. Better performances are rewarded with new boards, levels, and other hidden bonuses.
Other game features include the freedom to choose your own path and track your status in career mode, Head-to-head, Free Surf and Shootout modes, intuitive controls, multiple camera options and a great replay option. It's a great addition to the O2 collection. Watch out for a sequel, it's probably gonna happen.
