Summary

It’s summertime, the sun’s hot, it’s time to grab your board and head to the beach. It’s winter and it’s snowing, time to play Championship Surfer on the PC. Surfing titles are still reaching gaming maturity, the extreme randomness of the ocean makes it hard for programmers to simulate the constantly changing environment. Championship surfer utilises a ‘true 3D wave generation” engine to create some of the most incredibly realistic, virtual waves you will have ever seen.

As the title suggests, the aim of this game is to prove yourself as the best surfer in the land. As with the real sport, the real reason to surf is to simply to enjoy yourself. At first it’s important to practice your carving techniques and get used to staying afloat. Soon, you’ll pulling off massive 360’s and impressing the judges. There are four buttons that you can use to control your surfer, slash, hard slash, catch air and grab your board. You can use different combinations of buttons and joystick motions to execute high-scoring tricks.

If you have a 3D accelerator installed in your PC, the graphics in Championship Surfer are top quality. It manages to capture the beauty of the beach and the movement of the waves.

Once you master the art of computer surfing, and it does take some time and practice, you will find a decent game underneath. If you are prepared to risk the initial frustration of falling all off all of the time, then prepare yourself for one fun, surfing game.
