Summary
Batten down the hatches, the weather forecast is predicting a whirlwind returning to the PC with Jimmy White’s Cueball world. The people’s favourite is starring in the latest instalment of the PC cue sport simulation, set for the first time in a selection of global locations.
An accurate simulation of pool would be nothing without refined and realistic physics. If the balls don’t behave exactly how you would expect them to, the incentive to play is lost. The programmers have gone to great lengths to ensure that this game is as close to the real world as possible. Even advanced techniques such as spin transfer are accurately modelled. If you place spin on the cue ball, it will be transferred to the object ball altering its path.
As far as gameplay is concerned, Cueball world delivers. You already know whether you like pool games or not, and if you do this is one of the best. The control method is refined, making it easy to line up your shot and position the camera. The mouse allows for smooth delivery of the cue, making playing the game a pleasure and more immersive than ever before.
Graphically, Cueball World looks fantastic in the higher resolution display modes. One slightly bizarre feature touches upon the global locations, backgrounds are far from seedy pool halls and are more reminiscent of detailed outdoor locales. Backgrounds aren’t important in a pool game, but still add a visual quality to the offering.
Additionally, there are four sub-games to a little variety, including a pool version of crazy golf, a ball in a maze, darts, and thumb wrestling. Playing against the clock, or a friend is your choice. If you’re hooked up to the web, full TCP/IP modes are available to test your skills against the best players in the world.
