Summary
One of the most highly anticipated PC games of 2000 had to be Sacrifice. Since winning the best PC game at ECTS of that year, Sacrifice has had the gaming community screaming for more.
Sacrifice is an action-packed real-time strategy game from Shiny Entertainment, creators of Earthworm Jim and Messiah. In Sacrifice, you assume the role of an impressionable young wizard. You choose your allegiance to one of five Gods and your quest is dependent on the path you choose.
The way Sacrifice works is that you have a God and an Altar. The God that you choose decides the creatures you can summon and the spells you can cast. By collecting magical energy (mana) you can use spells to create structures and obedient servants. You can only summon creatures when you have sacrificed the souls of your fallen victims to your God. Your altar is important to you because it is your base and a source of mana. If you are killed, you are transported to another realm where you cannot cast spells or collect souls. When you are in this state you must make it back to your altar in order to regain your life. If your altar is destroyed, you will not be able to re-generate and your game is over. Likewise, if you wish to completely destroy an opposing wizard you must take out them and their altar.
Aesthetically speaking, Sacrifice is a work of art. This is eye-candy of the highest order plus the bonus of well thought out and balanced gameplay. You can organise your troops into groups and select individual formations for either attack or defence. This is one challenging game, taxing on the intellect and demanding on your reflexes. Sacrifice borrows elements from several genres and combines into one all encompassing masterpiece.
