Summary

While most common on the PC platform, point-and-click games do have a presence on the home console. Although they maybe lacking in mouse and keyboard facilities, games such as Broken Sword do not seem to have suffered. In fact, Broken Sword was so successful on both PC and PlayStation, that an improved sequel was produced. Titled Broken Sword 2: The Smoking Mirror, this game is even more engrossing than its predecessor was.

The heroes of the first game, George and Nico, are returning for yet another life-threatening adventure. This time around, their challenge is a truly sinister one. As the threatening darkness of the eclipse smothers all, the discovery of a sinister drugs ring by chance reveals an arcane power of an ancient civilisation. Torment and terror, sacrificial rituals and bloody massacres are unearthed beneath a veil of Mayan mystery.

While the story of Broken Sword 2 is an intense one, the pace of the game is actually quite slow; a typical feature of point-and-click games. But that’s not to say it isn’t intriguing and addictive. On the contrary, figuring out some of the game’s mysteries can be highly frustrating, yet satisfying. Throughout your journey you will interact with as many as sixty unique characters that will provide clues as to your next lead. Items are also of vital importance. You must learn where to acquire them and how to use them if you are to make it out of this adventure alive.

Broken Sword 2 is a much more accomplished game than its predecessor. Visually, it’s lovely, and it plays just as well.
