Summary

After a two year hiatus, Need for Speed returns. And it's just 'Need for Speed' this time - no fancy subtitles adorn the front of the box. This reflects a back to basics approach that players will find in the game, with the option to play as police stripped out to make way for a purer racing experience.

Developer Ghost Games has taken a novel approach to this entry in the series, introducing a plot for players to make their way through. You arrive in the fictional (but LA-inspired) Ventura Bay and quickly fall in with some friends who run a car modification garage at the heart of Need for Speed's massive open world. It's soon time to choose your first car, and it's worth choosing wisely. This time the game places the emphasis on picking vehicles and then really going to town to customise them until they're in the exact shape you want. You can buy new cars, but they're expensive and your garage will only hold five vehicles altogether, so it's worth choosing carefully. Whether you prefer to drift around every bend or stick hard to the road, you can tune your car to suit your style.

Once you're good to go, you'll start getting calls offering you events to take part in. There are five categories: Speed (straightforward races and solo time trials); Style (gymkhana, a mix of drifting and racing); Crew (all about the drifting; Build (a range of race options built around cars that are customised a certain way) and Outlaw (challenges with police hot on your tail). Each category has its own story, and as you progress you'll ultimately get the chance to take on a real-world racer at the pinnacle of each discipline in a bid to be the best of the best!
