Summary

Part of Nintendo's retro throwback NES Classics series, Ice Climber is another one of the little grey plastic shoe box's popular titles to receive a GBA re-release some 20 years on. As the title more than suggests, there's ice aplenty, and much climbing on the menu, amidst an assortment of hazard-packed 2D platform environments, typical of this gaming era.

If you've ever played Super Smash Brothers Melee you may recognise the game's two protagonists - the warmly clothed, mallet-wielding Eskimo types, Popo and Nana. The main objective of the game sees Popo (and, indeed, Nana in a two-player game) attempting to work his way up the game's virtual mountain of levels by using his mallet to chip away at overhead blocks and then jumping up through the resulting holes. Once he reaches the top level, he then enters a fast-moving bonus stage in which he can pick up vegetables and attempt to reach the summit.

Obviously, no game such as this would be complete without a veritable Manic Mine of dangerous creatures that stand to hinder progress. Popo and Nana have to contend not only with Mountain-men filling in their holes as they break their way through, but an array of Polar bears, seals and other ferocious fauna that need to be addressed with a swift mallet to the chops.

As mentioned before, Ice Climber also offers a multiplayer mode, which allows two players to take on the game's 32 mountains together with the aid of a GBA link cable. And believe us, later on you're going to need all the help you can get.
