Summary

Although essentially an RTS, Soldiers: Heroes of World War II has a much greater emphasis on raw action and, as a result, strives to give players a more involving role in the experience. The concept blends elements of a 3D shooter with those of the more traditional strategy romp, and subsequently challenges both your tactical ability, as well as your more visceral combat prowess.

The game plunges you into the war-torn battlegrounds of WWII Europe and presents you with a wide variety of realistic combat scenarios. You are in command of a small team of highly trained special forces positioned behind enemy lines, and charged with the task of getting them in, executing the mission at hand, and getting them out as quickly as possible.

There are 30 different missions to undertake in total, between them allowing you to play as either British, US, German or Russian forces. Each one has been inspired by the exploits of real life World War II events, featuring authentically modelled vehicles, weapons, units and ammo. The missions also offer a wider scope for your choice of actions, in many cases giving you the choice to, say, either opt for the stealthy approach or, alternatively, go in all guns blazing.

The aforementioned cross breeding of genres is most prominent in the game's rather unique control system. Two different control methods are available in the form of Team Mode and Direct Control - the former enabling you to command and move your entire unit, and the latter plunging you into the thick of it and giving you control of one specific soldier. And from here you can snipe, which is always nice.

As you would expect, Soldiers offers comprehensive multiplayer support, allowing players to partake in the action - in both adversarial and co-operative modes - across a LAN or the Internet.
