Summary

The ancient arcade driving game Spy Hunter has finally been remade for the PlayStation generation. In case you missed out on this classic game the first time around, in Spy Hunter you drive the G-6155 Interceptor and hunt down spies. Chase down heavily armed enemy vehicles and destroy them. Spy Hunter is a fast-paced, weapon-based, action-packed racing game.

The main difference between the old and new versions of Spy Hunter is the graphics engine. While the original used a 2D top-down perspective, the PlayStation 2 can deliver a full 3D first-person experience. This makes it even easier to actually get lost in the game and become the titular hunter.

What makes the G-6155 Interceptor the ultimate counter-intelligence machine is that it can morph into several different vehicles, it has an unbelievably fast top speed, and it features futuristic weapons. The G-6155 Interceptor can morph real-time into a speedboat, motorcycle, or jet ski. The weapons stay true to classic Spy Hunter style, with machine guns, oil slicks, and missiles. A weapon truck appears occasionally to upgrade the firepower of the Interceptor.

Each level is mission-based and has different objectives that need to be completed. The levels span some of the most beautiful locations from around the world such as Key West and Venice. Midway actually travelled to these locations to take photographs of the scenery to use as textures in the game. The use of photo-realistic texturing gives Spy Hunter a unique look and the game engine is accomplished enough to process these at high speeds.

Spy Hunter is the ultimate driving shoot-em-up. It originates from a time when playability meant everything and now the graphics match the gameplay. Definitely worth checking out.
