Squaresofts reputation as a video games developer and publisher is held in high regard in Japan and the Far East, and the Square name is now becoming equally popular across the rest of the globe. Although they develop a variety of games they will always be primarily associated with Final Fantasy. Such is the popularity of this series that a collection of two of their greatest games, Final Fantasy 5 and Final Fantasy 6, has been released in both Japan and America as an anthology.
Released on PlayStation, Squares most popular development platform at the time, FF5 and FF6 dont possess any gameplay improvements, but the video game CG experts have put enough time and effort into the games to produce some lovely FMV introductions and cut scenes. As unnecessary as this feature may seem to begin with, it does tell the two stories much better than the SNES releases could.
Staying true to the rest of the series, both games consist of an epic tale of love, life and death that are interspersed with magic, wizardry and of course, fantasy. Like it or not, Final Fantasy is renowned for its random battle methods of gameplay, and the fifth and sixth instalments are no exception. However, the carefully crafted balance between player and enemy statistics makes it a necessary attribute to the two classics.
Unfortunately the games wont see a PAL release for the foreseeable future, but with Squares recent intimation regarding remakes of some of the series for new platforms, there is still hope. Both games are worth a few weeks of anybodys time, and as the older titles become extremely rare, a chance to experience them should not be missed.
