Hideo Kojima doesn't smile very much. That's maybe because he's too busy thinking about sneaking around and espionage and stuff. We imagine him sidling along the hallway in his house on a silicone mat - chest up, undetected - as he enters the kitchen and slips a Pop Tart into his utility belt. That's how dedicated to stealth he is.
The good news is that this slight personality disorder does bear fruit we can all enjoy in the form of some corking videogames about sneaking around and stealing things, the Metal Gear Solid franchise being the proverbial ripe peach. Early adopters of Sony's PSP had to make do with a strategy themed spin-off – Metal Gear AC!D – and a lengthy wait for news of a true MGS game began.
It's a wait which is now over, as the famed producer explained to Famitsu Weekly. The game currently has the codename Metail Gear Solid BD, though the subtitle was not explained. Kojima Studio pledges an all-new outing in the series - not a remake - and with a serious gameplay twist.
"Even though it's on the PSP, it's going to be quite amazing," stated Kojima. "It may well prove too new for some people. I don't even know if Konami will sell this thing. I mean, personally it's interesting to myself, though no one knows what people will make of it. Seriously though, it's just a normal game. Just with one little thing radically different about it."
Was that...a joke? Wonders never cease. Perhaps our boys mis-translated his comments. We double-checked and Kojima definitely made a joke. About one of his games. Cripes!
Famitsu states that the new PSP MGS outing won't see shelf space until the middle of next year, making an E3 debut probable. If anything breaks in the meantime, we'll let you know.
