Resident Evil 5 To Be Next-gen Flagship Title
Capcom Research & Development division chief Keiji Inafune has made a more than pleasing comment regarding the future of the acclaimed Resident Evil series, confirming that current plans see a multi-platform next-generation launch.

Hot on the heels of Inafune's latest game being shown, an Xbox 360 exclusive, details of which you can digest here, the famed Capcom development lead has confirmed that the next instalment of what will certainly be survival horror gaming gold will see a simultaneous launch for both Xbox 360 and the still-shadowy PlayStation 3.

“We want to grow the Resident Evil series into a multi-platform franchise, so we hope to release it simultaneously [on the both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360]” Inafune told Xbox360ism, a Dorimaga Xbox 360 special supplement. “But since we don't know the launch period for the PS3 yet, so it's hard to say (sic) if this will be possible.”

Of course, this hints that a PlayStation 3 version could be left behind if its launch slips, a prospect that Microsoft and its fans are surely relishing as the possibility to secure a massive exclusive looms.

We will, of course, let you know exactly what happens, when it happens. We're nice like that.

I don't see why. The Ninty mantra is that the Revo will offer revolutionary gameplay... RE5 will be RE4 with even more bells & whistles on, nothing that can't be done a "normal" pad, as used by PS3/XB360...

I'm hoping Revo's games are just gonna be completely different to "use left thumb to move, use right thumb to look" gameplay.

I agree with Majin and would love to see RE5 on the Rev too.

Dear Kid, if you'd paid a little more attention to Rev details you'd know that the Rev will also have normal games, like what we have now as well as those that will use it's new features. This idea is no different to the DS's, where some games use the stylus or mic etc and others don't need to use them.

After the success of RE4 even with the GC being in third place it still sold an lot as well as winning awards for Capcom. I see no reason why RE5 couldn't be released on the Rev too. If Capcom mean multi-format then I expect the Rev would be on the list with maybe some new ideas thrown in. This might also make sense if the Rev gets released before PS3.

On top of all that I don't want to have to buy the whole RE series again on another console, so I'd like my RE's on Rev.

Well, I won't be getting either an Xbox360 or PS3, so they've instantly lost one customer.

I love Resi, but I will not buy a console for one game when the rest are boring and crap (yes, harsh judgements, but I don't like FPS or racers and that's all there is on Xbox 360 and probably a few normal Final Fantasy sequels on both).

I knew I'd regret treading on Ninty fanboy territory...

Joji, of course I know about the inter-connectivity of the controller, along with the fact you'll be able to use the Gamecube pad. I keep close attention to all gaming development (except mobiles).

If the Revo is gonna be your only next-gen console, then I guess you'd rightly be concerned about the lack of mention of Revo when these 3rd-party developers accounce their upcoming titles... hopefully they'll embrace it with these "traditional" games, but there are very few noises coming from these guys, which is worrying.

Are people here seriously only getting one next-gen console? Which ever one you decide on, you'll be missing out on some major gaming experiences - I'm planning on getting two to cover most bases; like this gen (XB & GC)

Yup, I'll only be getting one next gen system and it will have to be under £200 and it will not be from Microsoft. I will never buy anything non-PC from Microsoft.

If the PS3 is cheap, then I might get that instead of a Revo, but otherwise the Revo it is.

I know, my post was supposed to have a tint of irony to it.

It might go down to £200 after a few years, although at the moment I'm rather taken with the PSP. If they release a few of the PS2 Final Fantasy games, I think I'll get one. It appeals to me much more than the ugly DS (admittedly because of the MP3 and anime-watching capacity rather than the games).

Final thought: please don't get a 360. Don't support Microsoft in overtaking the market and hampering any innovation.

Definitely. Definitely want RE5 on the Revolution as well. If nothing else, it's because I'd like to have all my RE games under one console and not switch between consoles every time I play one.

And although I'm interested in getting a PS3 and Revolution, the former will have to be a wait and see based on price (which if it's anything like the PS2 will take forever to go down to an affordable US$150-$200) and whether it'll have the same hardware problem legacy that the PS2 had (i.e. needing replacement and with the PS3 price... no game is worth that). I'd rather not buy a lemon. Even if RE5 became PS3 only (much like MGS series), there's no way I'd risk so much money if such horror stories from PS2 owners are to be believed. Granted, with the Revolution (if the N64 and GCN legacy is to be used as basis) it'll depend on third-party software support that comes out. Hopefully it won't be another "it's a kiddy system so our games won't hit it" malarky. Just because it's a Nintendo system and has Nintendo "kiddy" games doesn't mean other developers must follow the same mantra (unless Nintendo is pulling their arm and censoring their efforts... which I doubt). I mean why was it that MGS2:Substance never made it on the Cube (if it was storage space I can forgive but anything else just seems more of "kiddy" assumptions).
