Following last week’s shocking news that a malevolent entity has been circulating a PSP-killing Trojan, there’s word that the DS homebrew fraternity are facing a similar problem.

The PSP Brick Trojan courted would-be emulator players by masquerading as a programme that would downgrade their firmware from Version 2.0. But more amusingly, the DS wiping program first surfaced as taihen.zip, and purported to be a programme that would allow you to view Hentai – Japanese cartoon porn. It’s also since reappeared as r0mloader.zip, in which guise it claims that it will allow you to run pirated game ROMs. A warning was issued on the forum at popular emulator site DCEmu.

Like the PSP Trojan, it turns your DS into a useless brick by flashing your firmware completely. But a crisis can be averted by using FlashMe – a common device employed by homebrewers – to update your firmware again.

Both the PSP and DS have been embraced by the emulator community as portable platforms which pack enough punch to run all manner of software. But as news like this shows, the scene can be a very dangerous place for the inexperienced to dabble.

Someone has a lot of time on their hands to be creating havoc for rom gamers and homebrew developers. Whether a disgruntled ex Sony employee or not someone out there must really hate gamers a lot to do this kind of stuff.

When you run on the beach beware of broken glass, the emu and homebrew scene have no become such a beach thanks to some muppet out to spoil a good part of gaming culture.
