Treasure president debunks 360 2D talk

Which is a shame…

The fact that it's empty is symbolic!
The fact that it's empty is symbolic!
As you will remember, EGM and its sister website 1-Up ran a new piece which confirmed Treasure is creating a 2 dimensional game exclusively for Xbox 360. The news had quotes from (unnamed) Treasure representatives and seemed totally legitimate.

“There is no major difference in terms of gameplay for the games that we develop regardless of whether it is for console or handheld because they are all based on 2D action,” a Treasure spokesman told EGM, raising hopes of a game being seen within the launch window of the Xbox 360 - hopes that were quickly dashed. “..we take pride in developing our games with an elite and dedicated staff, which is small, so it will take longer to develop an Xbox 360 title,” the man from Treasure concluded.

You can read the whole piece right here.

Well, according to company president Masato Maegawa, this isn’t happening. An interview on Fox Games channel IGN this morning asks the question, “It's been announced that you're making Xbox 360 games, and we've heard some buzz that your first game for the platform will be 2D. Can you tell us what you can do with 2D games on a powerful system like Xbox 360?” Maegawa simply replies, “Your information is incorrect.”

Which is a great disappointment. Of course, Treasure could be holding back, waiting for this Friday’s Tokyo Game Show to make a splash. Or 1-Up could have published a load of spew.

We’ll keep you updated wither way.

It really, really, really does help if people read the whole of an interview before accepting defeat:

IGN: It's been announced that you're making Xbox 360 games, and we've heard some buzz that your first game for the platform will be 2D. Can you tell us what you can do with 2D games on a powerful system like Xbox 360?

Maegawa: Your information is incorrect.

IGN: Ahh... well, in general, if you were to make a 2D game on the Xbox 360, what could you possibly do with all that power?

Maegawa: For making a completely 2D game, the Game Boy Advance and DS are fine. For next generation systems, including Xbox 360 and others, we'd do 2D with polygons -- that is, the visuals are 3D, but the game play is 2D.

To me that reads more like that he's correcting the misconception that the game is purely 2D, when in reality it would be 3D graphics in a 2D plane. I'm not and Xbox owner, nor plan to buy an Xbox360, I'm just pointing out that this doesn't rule out a game by Treasure on an MS system.

Well, its still not clear. Was the info incorrect that they were making a 2D game or making a game on the Xbox360 or both.
I tend to think both, I have a hunch Nintendo allready had a long talk with Treasure about making a kick-ass game for the Revolution (please be Sin of Punishment 2).

He's just not allowed to mention it (Nintendo's NDA's are keeping everything airthight)

Treasure don't make sequals. It's apart of their company policy (no Gunstar Heroes 2 :( ).

They do follow ups, but not sequals, so no Sins 2 for you.

EDIT: Maybe they've changed their minds.
