Lugubriously-voiced gay icon Vin Diesel has signed up to play Agent 47 in the movie adaptation of Eidos’ Hitman game, it was revealed today, making this the latest in a catalogue of movie game tie-ins to come spewing from the IP-hungry land of Hollywood.
The Hitman franchise has thus far shifted around 2.6 million units in the US alone, grossing an estimated $96 million since its launch in 2000. This fact, combined with the movie-friendly theme and storylines, makes Hitman an obvious candidate for a popcorn-powered makeover.
"Video games not only provide great stories and characters and high-concept action that translates well to feature films, but they appeal to the No. 1 demographic of filmgoers," said producer Adrian Askarieh. "The same people who go to the movies on a regular basis and buy DVDs also play games." Genius!
In slightly more interesting news, IO Interactive, Eidos and Diesel’s very own Tigon Studios are expected to commence 'round table' discussions aimed at reaching a development and publishing deal to tie in with the movie in a seamless example of inter-industry cross-pollination and self-perpetuation.
Expected to launch next year, the Hitman movie will also see Diesel take on the role of executive producer. We’ll keep you updated on its progress.
